Oramai li conosciamo.  

Conosciamo bene i problemi che affliggono il pianeta e, inevitabilmente, tutti noi: dagli effetti del cambiamento climatico alla popolazione che cresce, dalle risorse naturali dilapidate alle ingiustizie sociali, che si riflettono anche nelle difficoltà di accesso ad un cibo sano e di qualità per tutti. Occorre cambiare registro e farlo in fretta, ciascuno per il suo ambito, passando alle soluzioni, perché siamo già in ritardo. E quale migliore occasione del G7 agricolo di Siracusa, quando i ministri di 7 tra i Paesi più importanti si confronteranno sulle strategie da adottare per un futuro più sostenibile ed equo? 

Ecco perché questo numero di creafuturo  è focalizzato su tutto ciò che la Ricerca CREA – con i suoi 12 Centri (6 trasversali e 6 di filiera) – sta studiando per incidere sul cambiamento del sistema agroalimentare e forestale, a 360   gradi. 

Insomma, come scrive nel suo editoriale di apertura il Ministro dell’Agricoltura, della Sovranità alimentare e delle Foreste, Francesco Lollobrigida, il nostro è davvero tempo “di soluzioni che ci permettano di riprendere le redini del nostro futuro”. E non servono pannicelli caldi, ma idee coraggiose, serve soprattutto innovazione che, come scrive il presidente CREA Andrea Rocchi, “significa ripensare profondamente il modo in cui produciamo, distribuiamo e consumiamo il cibo”. E, tanto per rimanere sul cibo, la stessa dieta mediterranea, il modello per eccellenza della sana alimentazione italiana, è oggetto di ridisegno da parte dei nostri ricercatori, in chiave di qualità, sostenibilità e longevità. 

Certamente un contributo importantissimo alla partita lo danno tecnologia e genetica. Iniziamo dalla tecnologia: si stenta davvero a credere quante cose si possano fare grazie al digitale in campo, (ma anche nel vigneto e in serra) e perfino nella stalla… per non parlare delle gamma di possibilità allo studio sul fronte energetico. Anche la genetica – sia quella classica sia con le TEA – non è da meno: infatti, sfruttando la straordinaria ricchezza della biodiversità – in particolare di quella custodita dalle preziose collezioni CREA, si sta già lavorando oggi sulle piante di domani, più resilienti e produttive.  

Sulla difesa da malattie e patogeni è in fase di apertura il cantiere dell’avveniristico laboratorio nazionale al servizio dell’agricoltura italiana, mentre sui semi – senza i quali non si coltiva nulla – è partito il progetto che permetterà ai Paesi africani il migliore sviluppo dei loro sistemi agricoli. 

La tanto agognata sostenibilità passa per una interazione sinergica tra agricoltura e ambiente e su questo versante i ricercatori sono al lavoro per studi e approcci innovativi su suolo, acqua, foreste, e molto altro ancora. 

E infine, l’economia – soprattutto quella circolare- e le politiche, per conoscere e valutare scenari e prospettive. 

 Chiudo con le parole del ministro  Lollobrigida “Se è vero che la ricerca è il faro capace di illuminare la strada verso soluzioni innovative, allora l’impegno che abbiamo assunto nel sostenere la ricerca agroalimentare equivale al più grande investimento nel futuro dell’agricoltura italiana e non solo”.

Time for solutions!

We are aware. 

We are aware, indeed, of the issues that our Planet, and all of us, are facing. From the setback of climate change to the ever-growing population, from squandered natural resources to social injustices leading to a difficult access to good, healthy food for everyone. We need to get our act together, and we need to do it fast, each in their own field, moving towards solutions as we are already behind schedule. There is no better place to do so than the G7 Agriculture Summit in Siracusa, where the ministers from seven of the world’s most prominent countries will discuss suitable strategies for a sustainable, fair future. 

This issue of CREAFuturo focuses on the studies that CREA Research, with its 12 Centres (6 interdisciplinary and six supply-chain ones) is carrying out to impact the changes, for an all-round view, of the agri-food and forestry system. As Francesco Lollobrigida, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, writes down in his editorial, it’s time “for solutions that will allow us to be the masters of our own future”. To put paper over the cracks will be pointless, what we need are brave ideas and innovation that, as Andrea Rocchi, President CREA, rightly says: “it means deeply rethinking the way we produce, distribute and consume food”. To stick to the point, the Mediterranean Diet, the quintessential pattern of Italian healthy food habits, is currently being re-designed by our researchers, with a keen eye on quality, sustainability and life-expectancy.  

In this scenario, technology and genetics play a pivotal role. We are often in owe on how many things can be achieved through digital technology, whether in the field or in the vineyard, greenhouse or even in the barn…not to mention the wide array of chances being explored on the energy front. Genetics – both traditional and the New Genomics Techniques (NGTs) – is no less impressive. Leveraging the extraordinary potential of biodiversity, especially the one kept in the valuable CREA collections, we are already working on the plants of tomorrow, more resilient and productive than before.  

Concerning the defence against diseases and pathogens, a new groundbreaking national laboratory for Italian agriculture is well on the way, while on seeds, essential for cultivation, the project that will enable African countries to develop, in a far better way, their agricultural systems, it has already started. 

This much sought-after sustainability relies upon a synergic interaction between agriculture and environment; and in this direction researchers are working on innovative approaches on soil, water, forests, and so much more.  

Last, but not least, economy, the circular one in particular, and politics to understand and evaluate the different scenarios.    

I hope you will enjoy this issue, and I shall leave you, now, with the very words of Minister Lollobrigida: “If it is true that research is a beacon lightning the way to innovative solutions, then the commitment we have made to support the agri-food research is really the greatest investment for the future, and beyond, of Italian agriculture”.
